KLTV 7 Hand Up Network Needs Volunteers!

TYLER, Texas (KLTV) – As the number of confirmed cases of COVID-19 increase across East Texas, area non-profit organizations are working to help those affected by the disease.

One of those organizations is The Hand Up Network, The organization’s CEO tells us they work to help those who have been isolated and in quarantine.

We’re on call with all the various counties and the emergency management coordinators. So, if someone actually gets isolated due to COVID-19 or they have been designated that they have it and they are in quarantine, we don’t want them to break that quarantine,” Smith said. “If they don’t have a family or support team in place, we get the phone call and our teams are coming along to make sure they have food and whatever essential supplies that they need.”

The help from the The Hand Up Network reaches multiple counties.

“We need more volunteers to help us do that. The volunteers are really kind of the life blood of what we do,” he said. “We’re getting a lot more COVID-19 cases that are either being assumed where people have symptoms and they are self-isolating, or there are people who have actually tested and they do have it.”

Smith said volunteers do not interact with anyone infected or suspected of being infected.

“Your going to drop it off on their porch or wherever they said to drop it off and then you are going to go get back in the car and sanitize and move on,” he said.

KLTV 7 Hand Up Network’s Focus on COVID19

SMITH COUNTY, Texas (KLTV) – A nonprofit based in Smith County is working to ensure the safety of the many by helping those who are in isolation due to the COVID-19 virus.

The Hand Up Network works with city and county services to help East Texans in quarantine to prevent further exposure. The ministry tailors its response to specific needs, like grocery delivery, teaching prevention practices, and even video chatting with those who have been isolated alone for days on end.

“We’re there to help people when they’re going through a tough time, but at the same time, get them right back up and get them going,” said Sam Smith, CEO of Hand Up Network. “So that’s, for the most part, what we do.”

Hand Up Network has several response teams who have experience responding to communities with Ebola, hurricane recovery efforts, and helping individuals in vast poverty.

However, CEO Sam Smith said the COVID-19 outbreak presented unique circumstances.

“We try to respond and take care of people, but we’re not a food bank,” said Smith. “We really don’t do this. What we do is mentor people and help people. But, in this particular case, we’re ramping it up to do whatever we have to do because nobody is going to starve, and nobody is going to be in a situation where they feel like they have nobody to help them as long as we’re here.”

Smith said the experience the response teams have working with people during natural disasters can be invaluable to area health officials, who may have no experience working in emergency response before.

“Right now what we’re doing is coming alongside these groups and basically are there to help them.” Smith explained.

“We’re trying to be their right arm, trying to help them deal with things. Obviously, we’ve been there; done that. We’ve got some much experience with these types of things.

“There are many people in our society who are trying to deal with this situation, and they’ve never dealt with it. Fortunately — or unfortunately — we have dealt with it,” he added.

Volunteers and donations are the life-blood of nonprofit organizations. Smith said the Hand Up Network has needs just like many other organizations during this time.

Helping a Veteran in Need

Helping a Veteran in Need

A call came in during the COVID19 crisis about a lady who had not eaten in 4 days.  She had reached out to other groups, but none were in position to help her.  It was a difficult time, the County had just entered into a “Shelter at Home” order and she had run out of money from her monthly military disability check.  She did not want a hand out, but certainly was in need of a “Hand Up”!

Hand Up Network is actively engaged with our Texas Emergency Response Partners and is called when a person tests positive for COVID19 and must go into quarantine.  If they do not have family or friends to help them, Hand Up Network is stepping in to get food and essential items to them so they can maintain isolation.  It’s a stressful time for all and there is no question that people are struggling to understand what is happening around them.  This is especially the case for our Clients.  Many do not have the ability to “Shelter at Home” or keep up the hygiene requirements on a regular basis.  They also have no support system, other than Hand Up Network and we are filling this void.

This was the case for our disabled veteran.  A quick assessment of her situation and a trip to the local grocery store have addressed her immediate needs.  Tears were flowing and she will not be going to bed hungry.  She will be coming into Hand Up Network to see how our mentoring and programs can help to ensure that she will not be in this position again.

It’s God work and we are honored to serve!
