How Far Would You Go?
This weekend the movie God’s Not Dead was released in the United States. It is the latest in a line of movies with Christian themes, and though not considered an epic film like Noah that comes out Friday, this movie presents some really thought provoking script. The basic premise of the movie is that a devout Christian student is challenged by his philosophy professor to prove that God is alive or face failing his class. The student could just take the easy route and agree that God is not alive, but instead he chooses the harder path. It’s a great premise, but we won’t ruin the movie for you.
The bigger take-a-way from this movie is the question, “How far would you go to defend your faith?” There is no doubt that people of faith are being challenged at ever turn. The politically correct crowd is working hard to remove all images of God from our public spaces, regardless of the fact that our very constitution is based on Judeo Christian principles. Unfortunately, some choose to take the easier route of ignoring the actions of others and just let whatever happens happen as long as it doesn’t bother my world. This apathy establishes an environment that allows the moral fiber of our community to continue to regress.
What are the consequences to just letting things go? Well, history tells us that those that choose not to use the gifts that God has provided in the right way will eventually fail. What would the world be like today if the United States never existed? What would the world be like without God and Jesus providing guidance on how to live our lives? It’s been an exciting time to see the Christian world begin to receive recognition that our faith matters to Hollywood. Unfortunately, the recognition is based on money, not faith. They see a very loyal audience that will support good stories being told on the big screen. Let’s not let that distort the message, however. These movies are a great opportunity for all of us to take a step back and think about the type of world we live in.
Many will read this and say, oh you are just making a big deal out of nothing. That could not be farther from the truth. Many of those that we work with are on the front lines for God as we speak. We see directly the impact that God can make if we allow Him into our lives and to be used for His purpose. It’s an amazing thing to see in action, but it only occurs if we are willing to go that extra distance for God. What about you? How far would you go?
